Secrets of the "House of the Party"
The Onset
First, there was a thought, based on a concept to gather in a single place all the decision making centres of that time. The thought and the concept were the foundation for the decision to erect a building for seats of all the parties supporting the post-war reality.
Solitude of the Party
The thought, the concept and decisions underlying the origins of the building changed together with the changes of the political scene. In 1948, parties PPR and PSS united, creating thus PZPR. In the same year, PSL united with SL, creating ZSL, and two years later, as most of the SP members joined the SD, the SP suspended its activity, with SD left on the scene. Thus, before the Home of Parties was completed in 1962, out of 6 stake holders initially willing to dwell in the building, only 3 were still there.
Peasant - king, or the court etiquette of the "White House"
The personal office of the Party's President, Bolesław Bierut, used then by the subsequent KC PZPR First Secretaries - Edward Ochab, Władysław Gomułka and Edward Gierek, was located on the first floor, in the passage from Książęca Street. In the era of Gierek, in the beginning of the 1970s, the office was reconstructed into the conference rooms, with Gierek himself moving to the first floor of the eastern wing of the building. Those newly arranged interiors hosted consecutive First Secretaries: Stanisław Kania, Wojciech Jaruzelski i Franciszek Rakowski.
Remnants of the past
Although quite a few years passed, still many elements of the building give the impression of the standard of work the party notables provided themselves with.
Mysteries, legends, stories...
During the years, the most important building in the People's Republic of Poland evoked many legends, as all the objects accessible only to a few.
